Most Commonly Asked Skin Care Questions - Part 4

We are continuing our exciting series designed to answer your most pressing skin care questions. Your skincare is important to you as is any part of your health, and why shouldn’t it be? The human skin is the body’s largest organ, and it is the first trait that often jumps out.

It’s important to feel comfortable in our own skin and to tend to its health. Skincare goes beyond mere vanity and simple cosmetics. The health of your skin can affect your happiness and your outlook on life.

Knowledge is one of the most important tools you can have as you look after yourself, and so we know you have questions. Here are more answers as we continue to share what we’ve learned.

Question 1 - Can Skincare Cause Hives?

There have been plenty of reports of negative and even allergic reactions due to the use of skincare products, most of them cosmetics. It is true that some cosmetic skincare products may cause adverse reactions because of how they displace fatty and other skin cells.

This has much to do with individual allergy-inducing ingredients that sometimes cause different reactions in different people. Some tips for steering clear of hives and other irritation-causing products may include the following:

1) Always do an “elbow test” by using a small amount of product and applying a bit to the crease or bottom of your elbow. If it causes irritation, don’t use it.

2) Always check the label. The more ingredients there are, the more likely it may cause irritation. Try to get acquainted with all or most of the ingredients of any product you use.

3) Try out different products, but if they cause adverse reactions, discontinue using them immediately!

4) Always consult a physician or dermatologist if you’re using a product for a health condition, or if you think a product you are using is producing the negative effects on your skin.

Question 2 - What Skin Care Is Best for Anti Aging?

If you want to fight the aging process, some dermatologists have recommended a healthy dose of moisturizer and sunscreen. Our skin is absorbing rays of sunlight all year round, and over time the sun begins to take its toll, even for the infrequent tanner.

You should use a sunscreen with protection ratings of at least 30, whether it’s an autumn evening or midsummer’s day.

Moisturizers can help keep the skin healthy too, but you should also focus on keeping the skin free of antioxidants.

Hyaluronic acid is an ingredient you should look for and will become familiar with in skincare. Also consider products rich with Vitamin A and green tea extracts, among others, to blast away those antioxidants.

Question 3 - Are All Skin Care Products FSA Eligible?

Many individuals have the ability to set aside funds for eligible expenses in the form of a flexible spending account (FSA). In the United States, for example, an FSA may come with many tax and other advantages, but the money can only be used for healthcare expenses. For some, this may put the skincare in something of a gray area, but you may be surprised.

Many expenses ranging from visits to dermatologists to a wide range of skincare products you need for your personal health, are eligible for FSA coverage. You may need to consult a doctor or legal expert, but FSAs may cover a skincare product as long as it is FDA approved, prescribed, or even if it is used solely to treat a skin condition.

This may include anything from a mild case of acne to severe cases of shingles or psoriasis. It is important to understand these products must be approved and specifically for health use and not cosmetic.

If the primary purpose is to improve ‘appearance’ over ‘health’, it will probably not be FSA eligible.

Question 4 - What Skin Care Products Do I Need?

The types and even brands of skincare products you choose to use are going to vary from person to person. No two of us are designed with the same skin, and so our needs are different.

You’ll want to consider your skin type and the goals you’re looking to achieve with your skin. Is your skin too oily, too dry, too wrinkled? Whatever you’re looking to do, you’ll want to familiarize yourself with what’s out there, and remember above all else it’s all about the ingredients.

Also remember, always consult a dermatologist or physician if you have or think you may have a skin-related health condition before you attempt to apply your own treatments.

Question 5 - Can I Use Skin Care To Reduce Dark Circles?

Most experts agree that there are only a few ways to reduce dark circles around the eyes. How they are caused can range from many lifestyle habits, like excessive drinking and lack of sleep, to natural causes like aging and genetics.

If you can’t afford skin peels, collagen, or other expensive treatments, the best way to reduce dark circles is to pursue a healthy lifestyle, diet, and use the right over-the-counter products.

Eye creams should contain at least some of these key ingredients: hyaluronic acid, retinol, caffeine, Peptides, and whenever possible, a healthy dose of Vitamin C!
